Overview
There are two debit cards currently that have been on my radar! The first is the Discover 1% cash-back debit card, and the second is the Paypal 5% cash-back debit card!
Discover Debit Card 1%
Update:
Discover seems to have patched this trick - YMMV. So I’ve heard of people using this instead to do money orders / other methods may exist. But at least this current method no longer works for Discover. When I tried it, my transactions now fail. Best bet is to see if you can use the 1% for organic use or other methods.
[Source] Podcast Source where I found the information. I currently am in the process of opening up the Discover debit card myself, but it takes a couple business days to get approved it seems.
Let’s review the information though. The Discover Debit card gives back 1% per debit card transaction. And surprisingly, doing an Apple Cash load with this debit card counts as an eligible 1% transaction. There is a 3K spend cap per month for cash-back on this debit card though, meaning you’ll only earn 30 dollars a month.
What this means though is you can do:
Load the account with 1K
Withdraw to your Apple cash
Send back to a different bank account, and zelle the money over.
Repeat till you hit 30 dollars in cash-back
There could be other targets that also work, (especially with those without an iPhone) but that will require some explorations. I’ll give my own ideas at the bottom of this article for paid subscribers.
Paypal Debit Card 5%
The paypal debit card is a 5% back debit card up to 1K spend per month in your selected category. Meaning your maximum amount if you use it organically is 50 dollars back a month.
Supposedly, you can also set your category to “groceries” and do a money order at a grocery store and will still encode as groceries giving you 5% back.
