The redemption rate depends on the type of card you hold:

• If you have a Citi Premier, Citi Prestige, Citi Custom Cash, or Citi Double Cash, the redemption rate is 1 TYP = $0.01 (10,000 TYP = $100). ⬇️

💡 Conclusion: Redeeming for gift cards is generally more valuable than cash, especially when there are discount promotions. This is ideal for those who shop at these stores frequently.

3. Pay With Points (Amazon, Walmart, etc.)

TYP can be used for checkout payments at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and other retailers, but the redemption rate is usually lower:

• Walmart shopping: 1 TYP = $0.008 (10,000 TYP = $80).

• Shell Gas Stations: Redeem TYP for $0.50 per gallon, up to 20 gallons (maximum value of $10).

💡 Conclusion: Using TYP directly for Amazon/Walmart purchases is not recommended. Instead, consider redeeming cash or discounted gift cards first.

4. Citi Travel: Redeeming for Flights, Hotels, and Car Rentals

The Citi Travel Portal (partnered with Booking.com) allows direct TYP redemption for flights, hotels, and car rentals.

• Redemption Rate: Typically 1 TYP = $0.01.

5. Transferring to Airline Miles: The Best Value Option?

If you hold a Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card, you can transfer TYP at a 1:1 ratio to several airline partners:

• Top Transfer Partners:

1. Citi ThankYou Points Credit Cards Overview

The table below summarizes the Citi credit cards that earn ThankYou Points and their current welcome bonuses:

• Points earned from different Citi cards can be combined into a single thankyou.com account, where the system will automatically use the soon-to-expire points first.

• Points generally do not expire, but closing or converting a card, or receiving transferred points from another person, may cause your points to expire within a set period.

• Citi Prestige is discontinued. Existing cardholders can continue using it, and if you have a Citigold account, the annual fee is reduced to $350.

• Important Warning for Cash Redemption Lovers! If you hold Citi Prestige, Citi Premier, Citi Custom Cash, or Citi Double Cash, TYP can be redeemed for cash at a fixed rate of 1 cent per point. ⚠️ Without these cards, TYP cash redemption drops to 0.5 cents per point, making it a poor option!

• If you hold a Citi Rewards+, you get a 10% rebate on redeemed TYP, up to 100k TYP per year, further increasing its value.

3. Expiration Rules for Closing or Converting a Card

Although TYP generally does not expire, there are specific conditions under which points may expire:

1. Points earned from a closed credit card expire in 60 days.

   • If you close a TYP-earning credit card, any points earned from that card must be redeemed within 60 days, or they will be forfeited.

2. Points from a converted card also expire in 60 days.

   • If you convert a TYP-earning card into a non-TYP card, points earned on the original card will expire 60 days after conversion if not redeemed.

3. Shared points expire in 90 days.

   

   • If you transfer ThankYou Points to another Citi ThankYou member, the recipient must use them within 90 days of receipt, or they will expire.

   • Shared points cannot be returned to the original sender or transferred again to another ThankYou member.

To prevent losing your points, consider the following options:

• Redeem all points before closing or converting a card.

• Transfer points to an airline or hotel partner if eligible.

• Downgrade instead of closing to a no-annual-fee TYP-earning card like Citi Rewards+ to maintain access to your points.

How to Get Started with ThankYou Points

As the tax season approaches, many of us start looking for ways to manage our taxes more efficiently. Today, I'm excited to share a few strategies for paying taxes and some tips on how to save money in the process. This article focuses on the IRS federal taxes.

1. Overpay Your Taxes Early and Wait for the IRS to Cut You a Check

One of the most straightforward and hassle-free methods is to overpay your withholding taxes throughout the year. When you file your taxes next year, the IRS will refund any overpayment.

For individuals, estimated tax payment comes due January 15th, with the return due April 15th. So a play that some people do is to overpay their taxes, and file for a refund.

Should you? The question depends on your specific situation as you essentially will have an opportunity cost difference during that time of how much money you overpaid versus keeping that money in your wallet.

Another method seen discussed before is to overpay on an extension. File and pay the extension close to April 15th, then file the return a few days (or weeks) later.

Before executing any of these strategies, we do recommend to talk to a CPA who can advise you on the specifics of what is possible or not.

2. Pay with Credit Cards and VGC

Maximizing Your Paycheck While increasing withholding taxes ensures a hefty refund, it also reduces your take-home pay. Utilizing credit cards to pay your taxes can be a strategic move, especially for those looking to meet spending requirements on new credit cards and earn rewards.

Paying Taxes with Credit Cards

To pay your taxes via credit card, you must use one of the two IRS-designated payment processors. Currently, Pay1040 offers the lowest fee at 1.75% for consumer cards. However, be aware that using business credit cards and Amex now incurs a higher fee of 2.89%! For more details, check out this article: Pay1040 Fees Update. When making a payment, select “Form 1040 Current Year Tax.” You can make up to two payments per processor annually, totaling a maximum of four payments per year.

Credit Cards and Fees Overview

• Visa: 1.75%

• MasterCard: 1.75%

• Amex/PayPal (Visa): 2.89%

• ACI Payment (Amex): 1.85%

• The convenience fee for consumer/personal debit cards is $2.15.

Potential Concerns and Advanced Strategy

What if you've already filed your taxes and want to make additional payments? You can indeed pay more, and the IRS will eventually refund any overpayments, though it will significantly slow down the process. If you overpay substantially or repeatedly, it might raise suspicions at the IRS, especially if you're already due for a refund.

To manage this, consider adjusting your W4 to decrease tax withholdings, allowing you to keep more money from each paycheck while transitioning from receiving a tax refund to owing taxes—which you can then pay with a credit card. However, this carries risks; insufficient withholdings could lead to under-withholding penalties. Ensure you pay enough estimated tax quarterly to avoid penalties.

Changing Your Withholding Settings

You can adjust your withholdings using the IRS’s Tax Withholding Estimator: IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Note: The site is under maintenance from December 31 to January 15. After estimating your taxes:

• Submit a new Form W-4 to your employer.

• If your income includes RSUs, subtract any under-withheld amounts as RSUs typically have insufficient withholding.

• For income types such as referral bonuses, short-term capital gains, and dividends which aren't typically withheld at source, ensure to account for these in your tax calculations.

Frequency of Payments: Each processor allows up to two payments per year, totaling up to four payments annually.

Advanced Strategy: Adjust your W4 to reduce tax withholdings from your wages. This will increase your paycheck amounts but may require you to owe more taxes at year's end, which you can then pay via credit card. However, this approach carries risks—if you under-withhold and fail to pay sufficient 1040 ES, you might face penalties.

Special Considerations:

• If you receive RSU income, it's often under-withheld. Make sure to account for this in your calculations.

• For income types without withholding, such as referral bonuses, short-term capital gains, and dividends, ensure these are factored into your taxable income estimates.

• If your tax situation is complex or you are a high-income individual, base your estimates on previous tax returns to avoid underestimating your tax liability.

Other VGCs and MasterCard Gift Cards (MGCs) Gift cards that allow for zip code registration generally have better online support. For reference:

• MGCs with the number 5128 might be used on both ACI and Pay1040.

• Pathward MGCs with the number 4118 cannot process payments on ACI, but are accepted on Pay1040.

• MGCs numbered 5456 smoothly process tax payments on ACI.

Our end recommendation is probably the safest method is using something such as Citi Double cash and combo-ing it for another +1.8%. Historically online it seems that most people have had success with it.

Obviously everyone’s situation will differ and things may change every year, so we encourage always to double check if the way you plan to pay has any data points of success online.

3. Paying Taxes with Kasheesh (Untested & Unverified)

Kasheesh offers a unique solution for those looking to optimize their tax payments. This platform allows you to split any payment, including tax payments, across multiple cards. You can use a combination of credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid gift cards, or you can choose to utilize just one underlying credit card. The flexibility to distribute the payment across up to five different cards can be particularly beneficial for maximizing rewards or meeting spending thresholds on multiple accounts.

How Kasheesh Works: Kasheesh functions as a digital debit card, which typically incurs only the lower debit card transaction fees, rather than the higher fees associated with credit card payments. However, it's crucial to note that Kasheesh generally charges a 2% transaction fee for its services. To avoid this fee and enhance cost savings, look out for and plan your tax payments during Kasheesh’s “no fee” promotion periods, which waive this usual charge. Depending on your situation, it could even still be worth it to you without the fee waiver.

Potential Advantages:

• Cost-Effective Payments: By incurring only the debit card fee and avoiding the credit card fees, you can reduce the overall cost of your tax payments.

• Maximizing Rewards: Splitting your tax payment across several rewards-earning cards can help you optimize the rewards from different card issuers.

Points to Consider:

• Reliability: As Kasheesh is relatively untested and unverified in the context of tax payments, but the fact that they have an article on the subject suggests it should be possible. Note though that it could fail as Kasheesh as a payment method is not accepted everywhere.

This is an article explaining how to get infinite free trials by spamming new accounts through email / password. This is a carry over from something I’ve previously wrote that I thought would be applicable to this newsletter. So below is an adapter article:

One of the big things that I tend to be really interested in is generating free trials for software products. Especially in this day-and-age, where every company is trying to track us, I’ve focused a lot on how to mitigate it, and inadvertently also found out how to create “pseudo-identities” when signing up for these different services.

The example I’m going to walk through is going to be primarily focused on Classpass - a subscription based service that instead of committing to one gym, let’s you buy credit from Classpass to use with their affiliates. The reason why, is I think they have one of the most comprehensive discouragement to prevent this sort-of thing from any company I’ve seen. So if you can create a new account with classpass, you are able to make a new account with (most) companies. I still have some issues with trying rideshare companies 🤷. But otherwise! 95% of companies I generally have no issues.

Now let’s discuss the major hurdles:

Emails

To generate emails is the first step:

I used to use a small trick called "plus addressing". Which let’s say your email is: johndoe@gmail.com. You can write your email as johndoe+1@gmail.com when signing up for a service. And this will still get sent to your johndoe@gmail.com email.

There is also (dot) addressing, where: justin.test@gmail.com, is the same as ju.stintest@gmail.com.

This feature can be used to help you sort your emails, but also often many companies do not properly validate that these are the same emails.

(However Classpass does properly validate against this).

Meaning we need to use other options.

The next option is if you are paying for Apple Cloud Storage, which is 99 cents a month, which is worth it for me, they have a hidden email feature. Where through Settings > Apple Id > iCloud > Hide my Email you can generate pseudo-alias emails that have a icloud domain, but connects back to your real email.

This is what I tend to use, as I want to try to have access to the emails that Classpass sends me. But if I don’t care, let’s say a free crunchyroll account for the week, I use a service called: 48hr email. Which is a free, immediate to use service that let’s you have access to an inbox that is randomly generated with a URL, through a link, for 48 hours. Inboxes.com is also another email inbox website with less weird email domains.

Special Note:

Set up your own domain and you can have infinite emails always forwarding to yourself. This is a great option let’s say if you always need persistent emails where you can control the name of the email so it doesn’t look crazy vs iCloud / other relay servers might be random email mask names.

This is basically a “catch-all address”, where anything x@yourdomain.com, will be forwarded to you.

Phone Number

So there are tons of ways to go about this.

For a more “persistent phone number”, I use Google Voice. It’s an easy way to create a second number, and be more privacy minded when I hand my phone number out to different things that maybe I am more sketched out by. The problem is that it’s a “VOIP” number, which basically is a class of numbers that is an “internet based number” vs an “SMS card” based number.

But for Classpass they don’t take VOIP numbers and need an actual number, I use something called: VerifySMS, which for a small charge I can create a non-voip number to get the initial code.

Credit Cards

Finally is credit cards. So there is many ways to go about this:

1. Privacy.com is an easy one for US based users. It basically allows you to connect your bank account to a virtual credit card, where you can put any name, address, etc. and put a spending limit on it. Example, 1 dollar. I love this b/c it prevents companies from getting my real information, and them making it hard to cancel. However, I do know more than a few friends having trouble when they tried to open an account with them, so there are other options. (Also, Privacy.com if they see this behavior can sometimes begin to bounce the verification checks and prevent you from using them with a company).

2. Apple Card. The Apple card if you have an iPhone is create. It is a numberless card, and let’s you click a refresh button to generate a new card number. I will say, for some reason, Classpass is the ONLY company that somehow was able to still charge me twice in my testing, the 80 dollar fee when the trial switches to a “full subscription”. So make sure to cancel the free trial once you are done.

3. Revolut. This is for more international users, but I also use Revolut which also has a feature like Privacy.com where you can generate virtual cards. Has the ability to freeze a card, put spending limit, so on. The only annoying thing, is I had to deposit money into it their system to work - “sort-of” like Venmo. So that way, when I put 1 or 2 dollar spending limits, so that it passes the initial pending checks companies do to charge the card 1 or 2 dollars, that it would pass. But with just 5 dollars or so loaded, I’ve been able to generate and use Revolut card without issue.

4. Other credit card options: there are other options out there I am aware of too, such as Robinhood Gold Card, and other services that lets you generate credit cards / debit cards.

I have found specifically for Classpass, Privacy.com doesn’t work cause they reject things called “prepaid debit cards” which is what Privacy.com looks like to them. Again, this is a rare thing to guard against, but they do. Which is why I just end up using the other methods listed.

Unique Identifier - Incognito Mode

The final hurdle, to get around with Classpass was figuring out why every time I made a new account or logged in on my phone, I couldn’t use any of the credit, and I found out, I believe, that Classpass is tracking my device’s unique device id. This is something to note that using your phone directly vs an incognito mode on your browser can allow for “finger printing” your device.
B/c of this any new accounts generated on my phone would fail to let me use any of the credit, even if the account was successfully generated.

Instead what I had to do was just simply use the web version of classpass, and go incognito mode.

1. Create a new email

2. Create a new number

3. Add a temporary credit card

And from there, sign up for my class for the week.

Obviously, there are tons of ways to go from here. I’ve used this, especially if you have a partner or friend, to get referral bonuses for “grocery apps”, for crunchyroll accounts, for xyz new sign-up bonus etc. There is pain to this, so if it not worth my time, it isn’t something I constantly do, but even just knowing all this to hide your identity from a company is something I find worth it.

For example, maybe I sign up for a subscription that I actually use, but they make it impossible to cancel **cough cough, adobe**, then by giving them a credit card, email, and so-on that has a layer of obfuscation, I can just cancel the temporary credit card.
